Sherlock and Watson.
Now then. I love the world of Sherlock Holmes. I love the new films, the BBC series and, especially, the books. The relationship between Sherlock and Watson is perhaps my favourite fictional friendship.
However.
I do tire of seeing all these weird little cartoon drawings of Sherlock and Watson embracing each other and all that. In fact, the whole idea of ‘shipping’ annoys me to a degree, for some reason. Sherlock Holmes is not a romantic character.
‘All emotions, and [love] particularly, were abhorrent to his cold, precise, but admirably balanced mind. He was, I take it, the most perfect reasoning and observing machine that the world has seen: but, as a lover, he would have placed himself in a false position.’ - A Scandal in Bohemia.
Sherlock Holmes, in my humble mind, does not fancy Watson. He does not want to kiss Watson. He does not want to kiss anybody, save for perhaps Irene once or twice. For me, it numbs the thrill of Sherlock to see Sherlock and Watson perpetually bound together in a dramatic, gushing, orgasm-a-minute romance by members of the fandom.
I ignore it best I can, of course, but it still makes me roll my eyes. Why can’t they just be best friends? They are fantastic as best friends. Close friendship does not equal zealous campaign of repressed love. They depend on each other, but that doesn’t mean they want to (and, please, excuse my verb usage) fuck each other.
Also, I’ve read that some people have actually been moved to tears by GIF images from the series. ‘The Reichenbach Fall’ might turn out to be a devestating episode, but, from what I’ve seen on Tumblr, people are expecting it to kill their families and cause a supernova.
Sorry, I’m being flippant. It’s fantastic that people in the 21st century can get emotionally invested in a decades-old franchise. But you know what I mean.
